Belmont Historical Club Goes Virtual

Did you know that Belmont has been visited by three presidents? You may have heard about Ludwell Lee, who hosted President John Quincy Adams and President Monroe in a big bash to honor General Lafayette in 1825.

But the third president to visit Belmont, President Harding, came to visit the McLeans in the 1920s while in office. The McLeans were very rich, owned the Hope Diamond and the Washington Post, and had a crazy soap opera life. Belmont was just one of their homes. They raised and raced Thoroughbred Horses here. They went bankrupt during the Depression, and there was apparently a dispersal sale on the front lawn. Their picture is shown below, (not taken at Belmont). They were quite the characters! Doesn't the dog look a little worried?

The Belmont Historical Club has launched a long term project to piece together all the amazing stories of the Manor House. We have created a Google Group to provide a virtual space in which to store documents and build a timeline over time. The Google Group will ensure that any research done will be organized and never lost.

The next meeting is on Thursday, April 8th where we will give a quick tutorial on how to use the Google Group and search Google Books (an online depository of digitized books). We will also discuss future field trips.
