Belmont Historical Club Goes Virtual

Did you know that Belmont has been visited by three presidents? You may have heard about Ludwell Lee, who hosted President John Quincy Adams and President Monroe in a big bash to honor General Lafayette in 1825.

But the third president to visit Belmont, President Harding, came to visit the McLeans in the 1920s while in office. The McLeans were very rich, owned the Hope Diamond and the Washington Post, and had a crazy soap opera life. Belmont was just one of their homes. They raised and raced Thoroughbred Horses here. They went bankrupt during the Depression, and there was apparently a dispersal sale on the front lawn. Their picture is shown below, (not taken at Belmont). They were quite the characters! Doesn't the dog look a little worried?

The Belmont Historical Club has launched a long term project to piece together all the amazing stories of the Manor House. We have created a Google Group to provide a virtual space in which to store documents and build a timeline over time. The Google Group will ensure that any research done will be organized and never lost.

The next meeting is on Thursday, April 8th where we will give a quick tutorial on how to use the Google Group and search Google Books (an online depository of digitized books). We will also discuss future field trips.

Trash Transition This Week

The transition from New Vision to Patriot Disposal Services begins this week. Check out the new webpage:

Patriot Disposal Services provided a wonderfully comprehensive description of their services to the Web Committee, which has been captured on this webpage.

On Tuesday:

  • Place your trash out on Tuesday, so New Vision (old vendor) can collect your trash as well as your toter
  • If your recycling bin was not collected on Friday, place it out on Tuesday
On Friday:

  • Patriot Disposal Services begins collecting trash
  • They will collect your trash in any toter, even New Vision's, during this transition

  • Rigid plastic containers #1 - #7. That's right! We are no longer stuck with just #1 and #2

  • Any kind of cardboard, but it should not have any food waste (sorry no pizza boxes)
  • Wrapping paper is fine, but no metallic paper
  • Office paper (staples, paper clips and plastic windows on envelopes do not need to be removed)

Patriot Services also provides special collections (electronic recycling, big items qnd yard waste). The Web Committee will be releasing further announcements as on-line request forms for theses services become available.

Patriot Disposal Takes Over for New Vision Trash

As you have undoubtedly heard these past weeks, the community, including The Ridges condominiums, has made the decision to change trash removal vendors. Our new vendor, Patriot Disposal, located in Manassas, has served large communities like ours for the last six years. This transition will occur during the 2nd week of March (March 9th – March 12th) with full implementation being completed by the end of the month.

  • Your pick-up days will not change. Tuesday will be trash only. Friday will be trash and recycling pick-up.
  • New Vision Trash will pick up your garbage on Tuesday, March 9th. Please place your empty recycling bin out on Tuesday with your regular trash.
  • Patriot Disposal will begin picking up your trash and recycling on Friday, March 12th.
Patriot has committed to picking up your garbage and recycling no matter how it is placed at the curb. We are requesting that you keep using your New Vision containers until they are removed.

Look for further announcements as we set up online forms and vendor information on http://www.belmonthoa.org/. Thank you for your cooperation, understanding, and patience as we work our way through this transition.
