Sheriff's Office Reminder on Child Window Safety

The following alert came from the Loudoun Sheriff's office.  Good tips on how to keep our kids safe with the type of window and screen we have in Belmont homes.
---
The Loudoun Sheriff’s Office reminds homeowners to be careful when they leave windows open to let in fresh air and enjoy the warmer weather.

On Tuesday Loudoun County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in Ashburn where a 2 ½-year-old child fell from a second story window. The child was apparently leaning against a screen when it gave way. Fortunately he only suffered minor injuries.

Serious incidents such as this case are an often-overlooked safety issue for children. The National Safety Council offers these tips to protect children from window falls:
  • Avoid placing furniture near windows to prevent children from climbing.
  • Do not rely on insect screens to prevent a window fall.
  • Enforce rules to keep children away from playing near windows or patio doors.
  • Install building code-compliant devices designed to limit how far a window will open or window guards with release mechanisms to help prevent a fall.
  • Teach your child how to safely use a window to escape during an emergency.

EarthDay@Loudoun Family Festival is This Sunday

The Second Annual EarthDay@Loudoun Family Festival is being held this Sunday, April 25th from 11am - 4pm at Willow Creek Farm (near Clyde's Restaurant). Google Map

This admission-free festival will offer virtually everything for the eco-conscious including more than 75 exhibitors, a Green Marketplace offering earth-friendly products and services, hands-on educational activities for all ages and many other entertainment options.

John Stevens, the event’s Honorary Co-Chair and the Chairman of the Loudoun County Public School Board said EarthDay@Loudoun will be an opportunity for families to become real agents of change. “The EarthDay@Loudoun Family Festival will educate, entertain and inspire people to make quick and easy lifestyle changes. This is a new way of looking at many aspects of our lives, from what we buy, throw away and recycle, to where we buy our food, how we landscape and how to conserve,” said Stevens.

The festival is designed to be a family-oriented event to educate Loudouners on the environmental changes happening in the local area. Scott York, Honorary Co-Chair of the event and Chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors said the Willow Creek Farm venue will offer a backdrop that will truly motivate people to make a difference. “We all can benefit from education and direction about the evolving focus of wildlife conservation. This venue truly captures the essence of our new eco-friendly world and its right in own backyard in the Broadlands,” said York.

The EarthDay@Loudoun Family Festival is a non-profit event in partnership with The Piedmont Environmental Council.

About Broadlands Wildlife Habitat Committee

Their first accomplishment was to receive national certification for the Broadlands to be the 25th community in the nation certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
